Go non-profit!

Even if non-profits have no urge for harsh competition between each other in the future, they will have to compete against existing for-profit companies and corporations for now.

But it is simple. According to marketing rules, to make strong competition a product or a company must have a so-called Unique Selling Point (USP). In current society being non-profit is a USP in itself. If this is exploited in a creative and intelligent way it can make profit-oriented products or companies obsolete or at least make strong competition. Probably people will even be willing to pay a higher price for non-for-profit products or services.

Handicraft

A special category of production, which frequently uses the non-profit structure, is handicraft: the old ways of making 'products' or food. Specially regarding food, very much has been lost in Europa, when strict EU regulations and controls, suddenly made it impossible for individuals, small groups or even whole towns to maintain their local gastronomy, even if it had existed for centuries. As if some bureaucratic regulators locked up in their offices in Brussels could presume to know better than generations of locals working the land itself.
With more and more people turning away from industrial production nowadays, fortunately there is a renewed appreciation for handmade products, food and all related activities. New initiatives to regain old customs are seeing the light each day. A good example is the SlowFood movement initiated in Italy that is gaining international support.

Non-profit Internet

Another great domain for non-profit is internet itself. It is forseeable that in a shorter time than expected by most, many of the existing gratis but anyhow profit-obsessed services will be replaced by some or many non-profit counterparts, maybe even if payed for.

When the obsession for profit is taken out of the equation, the whole cycle of production, distribution, consumption and disposal falls back to what is reasonable, instead of depending on 'market forces' that are easily and frequently manipulated.
EurOpinion believes that all existing "market" mechanisms, based on obsession for profit and on fierce competition, can be turned into mechanisms of mutual collaboration with gain for society as a whole instead of one person or a reduced group. We strongly support all not-for-profit initiatives that can help make the profit-mechanism obsolete.
