European Spring, Nature and Climate
Our house is on fire.
We have a lot of pressing issues,
climate change is one of these issues.
It's the one that concerns all of us.
According to the latest polls
90% of all Europeans...
...and 90% in every single European country
already acknowledge,
...that we do face
a global climate crisis.
But Juncker and the other people
from this political establishment that rules us...
...are not doing anything.
Climate change is not a singular problem,
it's deeply intertwigned...
...with a global escalating inequality
and corporate and oligarch power...
...that has spiraled out of control
of democratic institutions.
To put it short: there is no healthy planet
without healthy societies.
And this is why we propose
a Green New Deal for Europa.
The Green New Deal answers
to the two most pressing questions.
First it's an investment bill
into a true green transition.
Invest in infrastructure
and new technology.
And it also offers a job guarantee.
There is so much to do
if we ever want to save this planet.
Especially in the core economy.
We have to heal our societies, we have to
take care of children and our grandparents.
We have to revitalize
poor areas and neighbourhoods.
Let's put away and aside the age
where all of this work was done for free.
Where people do it unpaid.
Where people are not recognized
if they contribute to our societies.
This is what the Green New Deal is about.
We build a new world,
we heal our societies...
...and we give everyone a job
that has a meaning and offers a living wage...
...for everyone who wants it.
Our idea is really very simple:
when the political order
and the natural order clash,
...we change the political order.
We don't let nature go to pieces.
How is it that we haven't criminalized
mass damage and destruction to the Earth?
The climate change is the biggest challenge
that we are facing today.
Problem is that
when we are discussing climate change...
...it's often about numbers,
temperatures, statistics.
It's alienating people
from what it's actually all about.
Talks about sustainability
needs to be involving.
Involving the people that are actually part
of the sustainable future.
It's not only a matter about
what to do or how fast to do it.
The most important thing
in the Green change is...
...changing the perspective of how
we look at what a good life is.
That a good life is not only a question about
growth in money and growth in wealth,
...but it's a matter of growth in happiness,
growth in nature and growth in empathy.
That's why we have to shift perspective.
Not only to measure politics in money.
We have to listen when our planet is calling us,
we have to answer it.
And we have to answer
the coming generations...
...the kids, the students who are on the street
every friday across Europa.
I want you to panic.
We have to answer them
and say YES...
...we put the climate in front,
we put our nature in front of us.
And that's why we propose
a climate compact...
...that demands of us that all politics
is climate policy.
Rasmus gives me an opportunity
to focus on one word.
One word that we must
all coalesce against: EXTRACTION!
Because if you think about it...
what is the source of all evil and discontent
and exploitation and inequality?
It is the extraction
of value from human beings...
...by other human beings
who posess exorbitant power.
What is the greatest source
of discontent for the planet?
Extraction from the Earth, from the sea
without rhyme or without reason!
What if we had Ecocide
as an international crime?
To combine the campaign
against extraction from the Earth...
...with the campaign
against extraction from human beings.
This is what the European Spring
is about!
